Abstract (AB)This review covers the performance of the eleven sugar factories which operated in Mauritius during the 2003 season. Length of season, cane quality, milling work, boiling house performance, sugar production, sugar quality and energy production are examined and compared with values for the previous season(bracketed). All parameters were calculated from data supplied by the sugar factories. The 2003 crop was among the worst in the last 45 years with low cane and sugar production. The bad performance was due to cyclone Gerry in February and unfavourably high rainfall during the cane ripening phase. The island average sucrose percent cane (11.80) was the lowest in Mauritian history except for 1999 (11.22) when cane production was affected by a severe drought.
