Abstract (AB)During examination of Meloidogyne javanica (Treub) and M. incognita acrita Chitwood, obtained from sugarcane roots in Mauritius, the bodies of several females were seen to be filled with the spores of a micro-organism. Subsequent study of this organism led to the conclusion that it is parasitic and also, judging by the frequency of infected nematodes, that it may have an important role in the natural regulation of Meloidogyne populations. The organism could not be identified but it is believed to be a Sporozoan belonging to either the Haplosporidia or Microsporidia. The spores seem to resemble those of Duboscqia penetrans Thorne, a parasite of Pratylenchus brachyurus (Godfrey), but certain forms which occur during development, as described below, are quite unlike those of any micro-organism recorded previously from nematodes. The observations made are by no means exhaustive but in view of the economic importance of root-knot nematodes some account of them seems desirable and they may serve to draw attention to the parasite elsewhere, for it is unlikely to be of restricted distribution.
