| Payment for sugar cane according to quality has been in force in Mauritius since 1940, and the method employed for assessing the quality of planters' canes and their share of commercial sugar has, with a few modifications, been successfully employed since then. The method is based primarily on the analysis of the planter's canes for fibre and of the first expressed juice for Brix and purity, and correlates these data with the factory figures from the crushing of all the canes for calculating the sucrose content of the planter's canes. Once the sucrose content is known, the recoverable sugar is calculated by using fixed efficiency standards laid down by the Central Arbitration and Control Board. | |
