Abstract (AB)Most seedling varieties are discarded in Mauritius for inferior weight of cane, and of the survivors the majority again for low sugar caontent. Of the two attributes, high weight seems the more difficult to achieve with the necessary length being the chief limiting component. Although it is difficult to get exact figures, the necessary combination of high yield with adequate ratooning ability probably reduces possible selections by approximately one half.
