| The first cane breeding attempts in Mauritius were reported in 1891. Results obtained by the various organizations and persons have provided the local industry with varieties suited to its special requirements. However, the diversity of climate and soil type in the island, demands more varieties adapted to the numerous special environments. Combination crosses of proven aparents have given siutable results up to now. The range of parent varieties in use is enlarged by importations from other cane-growing countries and by selection from locally produced seedlings. The incidence of flowering in various years differs markedly in Mauritius. Induction of arrowing in sparse-flowering varieties has been tried throughout the years with limited success. Successful results have been obtained with experiments on retardation of flowering in free arrowing varieties. Most crosses are made inside a heated greenhouse. Results with a solution-technique have been unsatisfactory so that most of the female canes used in crosses are marcotted. A general method for applying these marcottes is described. Crosses in the field are made in glass lanterns, while in the greenhouse, linen lanterns are used. Fuzz is sown, 3-5 days after ripening, in the greenhouse. At the age of 4 months, seedlings are transplanted into the fields, mostly in bunches of 6-8 plants. The various stages of selection are described. The criteria used for selecting are: yield, sugar content, growth habit, ratooning capacity, disease resistance, flowering, maturing, milling qualities and reaction to fertilization. | |
