Abstract (AB)This paper considers the three control effects known as 'proportional', 'integral', and 'derivative responses' which are usually found in automatic controllers. For each of these control effects there are optimum settings which depend upon the plant that is being controlled. To find these optimum settings, it is necessary to understand the units in which the setting dials are calibrated and these are discussed in the second part of the paper. Finally the three most commonly used methods for finding the optimum settings are described.
