Abstract (AB)The response of root primordia to different pruning treatments was investigated in ten sugarcane varieties. Pruning of sett roots neither induced the formation of new root primordia nor stimulated germination of primordia. A deleterious effect of total pruning on germination of sett roots was observed with varieties B.H. 10/12 and B 3337. Of the total number of root primordia on a sugar cane sett, only a certain number were found to produce sett roots. An exception was the variety M 31/45, in which all the root primordia grew into sett roots. More than 70 per cent of the sett roots developed during the first month of growth.
